The questions that come up most often.
Can I really apply for probate myself without a solicitor?
Yes. The Probate Office has dealt with personal applicants for decades and the staff are used to helping them through the process. Personal applications work well for standard estates: a family home, a couple of bank accounts, a pension, family beneficiaries. What a solicitor brings, beyond the paperwork, is judgement on complex situations. If the estate is contested, has overseas assets, involves business or farm transfers, is above roughly €1 million, involves minors or Section 117 claims, or has unusual tax circumstances, a solicitor is the right call. The Readiness Check is designed specifically to tell you which category your estate falls into.
How quickly will I receive my pack?
Within ten minutes of payment. Your answers feed directly into the generation pipeline. Once the Stripe payment is confirmed, the system generates your personalised PDFs, worksheets, and letters, and emails them to the address you provided at checkout. For the Preparation Pack and Complete Bundle, the email includes both PDF and editable formats (DOCX for letters, XLSX for trackers).
What tax year and thresholds do the packs use?
2026. Every pack uses the current CAT thresholds (Group A €400,000, Group B €40,000, Group C €20,000), the 33% CAT rate, the IT38 filing triggers, and the current Dwelling House Exemption, Agricultural Relief, and Business Relief rules. Source figures are verified against Revenue.ie and the Irish Statute Book. We update within 48 hours of any Budget or statutory change.
What happens if the estate has overseas assets or is contested?
The Readiness Check will flag this and recommend a solicitor. ProbatePack is designed for standard personal applications. It does not produce valid output for estates with material foreign property, contested wills, Section 117 claims, trust structures, or insolvent estates. The Readiness Check is €79 well spent specifically because it tells you whether you are in scope for personal application before you commit time or money to a more expensive pack.
How accurate is the CAT calculation?
The CAT and IT38 workbook in the Complete Bundle uses the same thresholds, aggregation rules, reliefs, and filing triggers published by Revenue. Every beneficiary row on the SA2 is cross-checked against their relationship category (A/B/C), prior gifts since 5 December 1991, and the current thresholds. The output is suitable for a personal applicant to use as the basis for each beneficiary's IT38 filing. It is not a substitute for a qualified tax adviser on complex estates, and the pack says so in writing.
Can I get a refund if the pack is not what I expected?
Yes. 30-day refund for quality issues. If any generated letter has a factual error, wrong address, or missing component that we cannot correct within five working days, the pack is refunded in full. No refund for "I changed my mind after receiving the PDF": the personalised files are generated the moment you pay. See the full refund policy.
Is my data secure? What happens to my answers after delivery?
Stripe handles all payment data. We never see credit card details. Your questionnaire answers are stored only long enough to generate your pack, then deleted from our servers 30 days after delivery. Generated PDFs are hosted on Cloudflare R2 with presigned URLs that expire. We use Kit for follow-up emails and Plausible for privacy-respecting analytics. Full details in the privacy policy.
